10 Great Horror Movies Made By Non-Horror Directors

6. From Dusk Till Dawn - Robert Rodriguez

Guerilla filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, nicknamed the ‘filmmaker’s filmmaker’, has dipped his hand into a wealth of different genres with films such as Desperado, Spy Kids, Four Rooms and Sin City. Throughout his filmography though, he has only made three horror movies, of which the first was the incredibly popular vampire flick From Dusk Till Dawn.

Written by Quentin Tarantino for Rodriguez to make, From Dusk Till Dawn has since become a legend of the horror genre with many sequels, spin-offs and a Netflix TV show. Its action-packed silliness helped it stand out in a genre that was growing more serious in the late 1990s (Vampire Horror), and with a cast of iconic legends such as Cheech Marin, George Clooney, Salma Hayek and Harvey Keitel, From Dusk Till Dawn was met with critical acclaim and a profitable box-office when it was first released.

Rodriguez has built a career on films that shouldn’t be taken seriously, so for him to make a film like this shouldn’t come as a surprise. However, the fact that he pulled it off so well when it was the first horror movie of his career should be applauded as it led the way for future action horror films such as Blade, Overlord and Zombieland to become major hits.
