10 Great Horror Movies Over 2 Hours Long
6. Midsommar
In Ari Aster's Midsommar, Dani heads to an isolated Swedish town to help her get over the tragic death of her family. After she discovers the locals belong to a dangerous pagan cult, Dani realises her life is in jeopardy.
Let's get this out of the way - Midsommar is not for everybody. Not only is it a bum-numbing 148 minutes, a lot of the scenes move at a snail's pace. Theoretically, the film could've been cut down to 90 minutes without impairing the story in any way.
However, Midsommar's length works to its advantage. In all of the most shocking scenes, the audience has a very good idea what is about to happen. We know what that phone call in the opening scene is about. We know what's going to happen to the elderly couple who climb up to the cliff top. But because these moments take their time, we go on an emotional journey with the characters, which makes the payoff far more impactful.
Midsommar is far from outright scary but it will definitely keep viewers unnerved for days to come.
