10 Great Horror Movies That Fall Apart At The End

5. The Girl With All The Gifts

Last Night In Soho
Warner Bros.

The Girl with all the Gifts - an adaptation of the Mike Carey novel of the same name - picks up in a world where society has collapsed after a fungal virus has mutated most of humanity into zombified creatures called hungries. When a research team realises young hungries retain their personality and morality, they begin experimenting with infected children, hoping to find a cure.

Due to the abundance of unimaginative zombie flicks, The Girl with all the Gifts feels like a breath of fresh air. Not only is it a smart twist on a tired trope, but it also focuses on the ever-changing dynamics of the main ensemble rather than the overall premise, making a far more human story. The narrative is so effective at setting up character motivations and world-building, it genuinely feels like this could be one of the best zombie films ever.

Unfortunately, The Girl With All the Gifts uses all its best ideas in the beginning. Unlike other entries in this list, there is no specific jump-the-shark moment. Instead, it slowly but unmistakably turns into another run-of-the-mill zombie movie. Although the second-half isn't terrible, there is little to differentiate it from anything else we've seen a million times before.
