10 Great Horror Movies With An Incredibly Simple Premise

5. Hell Fest

Hell Fest
Lionsgate

In a spot of incredibly cruel irony, a horror-themed park becomes the sight of some actual horror in this underrated 2018 gem.

Harking back to the classic slasher flicks of old, the film follows a bloodthirsty killer known only as The Other. Like so many slashers before him, The Other has a penchant for butchering teenagers.

For protagonists Natalie and Brooke, The Other's presence rather unsurprisingly completely ruins what was meant to be a fun festival outing. It takes the killer an unexpectedly long time to really start piling up the corpses but once he does, it's a fun thrill-ride with a sharp, maze-set climax to enjoy.

The film homages plenty of the absurd tropes most commonly associated with the slasher genre, playing them up for campy effect as the mayhem sets in. At the time of release, Hell Fest was poorly received by critics. Many reviews highlighted the film's by-the-numbers plotting and adherence to genre norms as key issues. For slashers fans, however, the simplicity and throwback storytelling is exactly why this film works so well.

To top it off, there's a surprising and unnerving epilogue scene that sheds some very curious light on the film's homicidal antagonist.
