10 Great Horror Movies You Definitely Missed In 2023
1. When Evil Lurks
Demian Rugna's supernatural thriller centres around demon-hunting brothers Jaime and Pedro, who flee their hometown after failing to exorcise a dark spirit.
In a nutshell, When Evil Lurks accomplishes everything a horror movie should strive for. It grabs viewers' attention immediately, devises simple but solid world-building, and has visceral gore that's guaranteed to make anyone retch.
Although jump-scares can be gimmicky, that's not the case here. When Evil Lurks utilises this trope with perfect precision, magnifying an already creepy movie into something truly haunting. (There's one scene in particular involving a dog that's guaranteed to make anyone leap out of their skin.)
Of course, none of the scares would matter if the ensemble wasn't up to scratch. Fortunately, Rugna puts such effort into fleshing out the characters, it's heartbreaking when things go south. Viewers can get so invested in one scene involving an ex-couple arguing, it's easy to forget they're watching a crap-your-pants horror.
Now, it's worth mentioning the film's outrageous violence is not for the faint of heart. However, When Evil Lurks will feel tailor-made for true horror fans that want to be challenged and experience genuine terror.
