Embers presents us with a world in which the majority of the human race has died out as the result of a global pandemic. Pretty standard apocalypse stuff. However, the survivors in this drama are not your usual gung-ho bunch of raggle taggle misfits, storming through the wastes on a mission to avenge their fallen loved ones. Almost all the characters in this dystopian sci-fi have no ability to form memories beyond what they’ve experienced since they’ve woken up. Each character appears to have no recollection of the previous day, or their previous lives, or how they ended up in their current bleak predicaments.

We follow a handful of different groups of survivors as they try to navigate the wastelands, almost blissfully unaware of the futility of their lives. Meanwhile, two characters, a father and daughter, are sealed up in a high-tech underground vault, protected from the effects of the disease but with one of them yearning for the outside world.

Although the film is pretty light on plot, seemingly coasting along on its original premise, there’s enough rising tension and a few unexpected twists that make it a worthy watch.

Created in a petri dish in an underground lab, I was originally designed by scientists to carry out high-profile assassinations for the CIA. Unfortunately, something went wrong and my only skill was writing list-based articles. So now I do that instead.
