10 Great Low Budget Movies Which Cleaned Up At The Box Office

8. Halloween

Films like Psycho and Black Christmas might have explored the concept of the knife-wielding serial killer before John Carpenter released Halloween in 1978 but few other movies have served up such an iconic screen villain as Michael Meyers. Wearing his creepy William Shatner mask and towering over his innocent victims, Meyers sits comfortably in the horror hall of fame alongside other legendary monsters such as Leatherface and Freddy Krueger. The original Halloween pretty much kick started the slasher genre, leading to a slew of increasingly inferior sequels and imitators. Carpenter mastered the tropes of the genre while establishing many more, and Halloween is quite rightly remembered as a true horror classic. Budget: $325,000 Box office: $70 million
