Irish playwright turned film director Martin McDonagh is the newest member of the film community on this list having only directed two feature length films. The reason for his ranking is primarily due to his 2008 film In Bruges which was one of the best films to be released that year. Telling the story of two hit men (played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) who have to hide out in the city of Bruges Belgium after a hit goes wrong. The movie successfully alternates between comedy and drama and is one of the more emotionally complex movies made in recent years. His followup Seven Psychopaths was also one of the most underrated films of 2012. Although more one dimensional then In Bruges, it was arguably among the most purely entertaining movies to come out last year. With no projects currently in production, McDonagh will probably remain one of the most overlooked directors out there. Filmography:In Bruges (2008), Seven Psychopaths (2012)

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
