10 Great Modern Horror Movies That Were Made For Next To Nothing

1. The Demon's Rook (2013)

There are few things you're more likely to hear fans complain about from modern horror than the overuse of CGI at the expense of practical make-up effects. In this climate, James Sizemore's debut feature is a true godsend. Well, maybe that's not the best choice of words considering it's a vision of demons run amok in middle America...

Shot over the course of two and a half years to the tune of $70,000, The Demon's Rook would be an impressive piece of work under any circumstances. It's all the more impressive considering just how much James Sizemore did on the film: directing, composing and performing the score, and perhaps most impressively designing and constructing the many remarkable make-up creations (which he did self-taught, with no previous experience).

On top of all that, Sizemore co-wrote the script with Akom Tidwell, and also plays the lead as Roscoe, a man who was stolen away to a demonic underworld as a boy, and escapes to be reunited with his childhood friend Ava (Ashleigh Jo Sizemore, the director's real-life wife). Unfortunately, the demons are hot on his tail, and anyone that stands in their way is in for - quite literally - bloody hell.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
