10 Great Monster Movies You May Have Missed
8. House (1977)
A cult-classic for fans of Japanese horror, 1977's House features one of the most memorable and bizarre human/creature battles in cinematic history. It was directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, a film-maker who started out in TV advertising and swerved into experimental territory before making his mark in the mainstream movie world, enjoying a incredible 60-year career.
House displays Obayashi's taste for bold weirdness. The protagonists, seven schoolgirls (of course), and indeed most of the cast, were amateur actors, with little to no previous experience. The film's plot concerns an ill-advised trip by the girls to a country house belonging to an aunt. Said house, of course, turns out to be haunted.
The monster is this fantastic entry is none other than the house itself, which proceeds to murder the girls in various outlandish ways. As a bonus, there's a demonic white Persian cat to enjoy. Much of the film's allure lies in its striking and surreal cinematography. The British Film Institute aptly described House as “a head-on collision between The Evil Dead and Yellow Submarine.” What more could you ask for than that?
