10 Great Movie Characters Killed Off Immediately In Sequels
9. Vanessa Kensington - Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
As the perfect James Bond spoof, Austin Powers over the course of the movie trilogy has ticked off just about every Bond-esque cliché possible. The action, the cars, the puns, the villain, even the names of the movies, and of course Powers’ love interests have all been created with this particular imitation in mind.
After International Man of Mystery, there was another Bondism for Powers to pull off, namely that 007 unfailingly has a different woman by his side for every adventure. This was something that needed to be solved at the beginning of The Spy Who Shagged Me.
At the end of the first movie, Austin Powers got married and skipped into the sunset with Vanessa Kensington. At the start of the sequel, to make room for a new love interest in the form of Felicity Shagwell, the new Mrs. Powers had to be killed off.
The easiest and most obvious way to do this? A retcon that she had been a fembot with ‘machine gun jubblies’ from the start. It fit in perfectly with the tone of the movie, and was done for a specific reason, but it was still a shame not to see more from Vanessa in the franchise.
