10 Great Movie Characters Who Defined 2012

2. Selina Kyle (The Dark Knight Rises)

Leaked-Footage-Of-Catwoman-On-The-Batpod-From-The-Dark-Knight-Rises Every year a movie becomes such a smash hit that come halloween the costume choice becomes all about the character from that movie. Needless to say, we all had the embarrassment of thinking we were unique after The Dark Knight graced our screens, turning up to a Halloween party as The Joker, only to find there was at least two others who had had this same enlightened idea. Last year women everywhere, shamelessly including myself, donned their best imitation of the brazenly sexy cat suit to attempt the suave sensuality of Hathaway's catwoman. Anne Hathaway first graced our screens as the awkward social outcast-cum-princess in 'Princess Diaries' placing herself in our subconscious as the go to girl for a geeky teen star. However, unlike a lot of stars that start in their teens she escaped the fate of being typecast and has, in the past year or so, really come into her own as an actress. Starring in 'Alice in Wonderland' in 2010 she proved to be more than a star tied to comedies and light hearted roles but in fact a skilled actress capable of portraying something more. Batman, I feel, was solidly her turning point and, again, playing a more down to earth villain - transformed from a cheesy comic book villain to a crook with a troubled past - she sparkled and brought the character to life. Starring as Selina Kyle, a high scale thief specialising in the material possessions of the extremely wealthy she subtly continues the theme of anarchic villains that 'The Joker' began in 'The Dark Knight'. "You're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us," she states to Wayne dressed bravely as a cat at a masquerade ball, she seems to be a sexy, leather-clad, modern day Robin Hood, taking from the rich to support herself and other friends in poverty close to her. All in all, well within the theme of Nolan's Batman trilogy, this character has turned the comic book version on its head and brought her down to earth and much grimmer and grittier. I think Hathaway's portrayal, along with the rest of the cast, is the one we'll remember the most, whether be in awe of her acting skills, in awe of the movie as a whole, or simply by plucking up the courage to pretend we're as fabulous as Anne Hathaway in a cat suit at a fancy dress party.
