10 Great Movie Stories Wasted On Terrible Sequels
9. Murders Occur On The Movie Set For A Scream Like Film - Scream 3
The Wes Craven directed Scream franchise managed to breath fresh life into the slasher film sub-genre, serving the perfect mix of meta referencing and genuine scares. The run of quality entries for the franchise looked set to continue with the strong story idea for the third entry, with Ghostface now on the rampage on the set of Stab 3.
This idea not only played into the meta themes of the franchise, but also seemed to have an abundance of possibilities for some great scares. The audiences infatuation for horror sequels was also delightfully played up with this story, the idea that audiences in both the real and 'Scream' world couldn't get enough of the murders. The return of franchise favourite Randy in a video explaining the 'rules' of a third horror film was a welcome return and one that reengages the audience in the 'Scream' universe.
Sadly the film was a bomb, using every cliched slasher technique the previous entries had chastised. The scares are minimal, you can see the deaths coming a mile off, and the movie treats its audience like idiots. Neve Campbell gives her all as Sidney, but the whole thing just felt tired and didn't live up to its potential.
