9. Sullivan's Travels
Fans of the Coen Brothers' movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? would do well to take the time to hunt down and watch a copy of Sullivan's Travels - this classic satirical comedy from Preston Sturges was something of an inspiration for their quirky comedy. Starring Joel McCrea as a movie director eager to make a socially aware movie in which the concerns of the poor are articulated on the silver screen, Sullivan's Travels is as much a satire on the superficial nature of Hollywood as it is a fantastic screwball comedy in its own right. Sturges handles the quick fire dialogue and slapstick with the same effeciency and flair as directors like Howard Hawks. Sullivan's Travels is also worth a watch for Veronica Lake in perhaps her finest performance - the actress never quite achieved her full potential, and while her own life story is a sad one it's great to see her radiant presence on screen here.
