10 Great Movies About Men In The Wilderness

8. The Edge

The Hunt For The Wilderpeople
20th Century Fox

A mercurial Anthony Hopkins and a pre-BT ad Alec Baldwin took part in the ultimate male pissing contest when they wound up being thrown together in an inhospitable death zone miles from anywhere.

The older of the pair played the wealthy and wily Charles, who became stranded in Alaska in the company of chiselled snapper Bob after their plane went down. Hopkins suspected Baldwin of carrying on with his trophy wife (Elle Macpherson), making the two reluctant partners in adversity. Just when they thought things couldn't get any worse, a ferocious bear joined the fun, triggering a full on battle for survival.

The script was by testosterone-heavy chronicler of man angst, David Mamet, so the adrenaline was at maximum levels throughout. This unusual blend of action adventure and cerebral wordplay showcased the great outdoors as a savage landscape where you were forced to cast aside social convention and adapt.

If you didn't, you'd find yourself the main course for a marauding mammal.
