Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t spare the horses for his recent, outdoor-bound historical drama. In fact the horses were too busy falling off cliffs. Acclaimed for its unrelenting style, the movie put the viewer in the thick of the action, turning a brutal and true-ish tale into a box office smash.

The dreamboat star roughed himself up as Hugh Glass, the well-known tracker who was attacked by a grizzly whilst shepherding a party through the lawless American snowscapes. Having been left for dead, Glass survived and embarked on a journey fuelled by savage revenge for his callous former employers.

An eye-wateringly grim tale netted a raft of glitzy Hollywood awards, from Globes to Oscars. Surprisingly good going for what amounted to a bleak Western crossed with a first person shoot 'em up. Cast-wise this was a man-fest of epic proportions, with Tom Hardy putting meat on the bones of the piece alongside DiCaprio and the young pups of Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter. All showing that humanity is the nastiest predator in the cold wilderness.
