4. American Psychopathy - Ferris Bueller's Day Off

John Hughes's Ferris Bueller's Day Off might look like a coming-of-age comedy about a rebellious-spirited teenager bunking off school and going on an adventure, but beneath the surface there's perhaps more than meets the eye.And it isn't all fun and games. A popular interpretation of Ferris Bueller's Day Off circulating around the internet is one that invokes Fight Club, with Bueller a Tyler Durden-like manifestation of the subconscious. Another interesting theory, however, views the character more in terms of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman; an embodiment of the psychopath. Certainly when you compare his actions and characteristics to the psychopathy checklist drawn up by famed psychologist Robert Hare he seems to fit the bill - glib, narcissistic and displaying superficial charm, Bueller is also a manipulative liar who lacks remorse or guilt for his actions. Again, it's questionable whether or not this interpretation of Ferris Bueller's Day Off was at all intended by the filmmakers, but regardless of this it's nevertheless an entertaining angle to adopt next time you sit down and watch his seemingly light-hearted antics playing out on the screen.
