8. Tron: Legacy - (December 12th, 2010)
I should go ahead and get this out of the way; you are going to see Disney films on this list a lot. They are one of the best (my personal favorite) studios in the world. They know audiences, they know fans. They know story, character, and quality unlike any other. And they have been doing it for almost 90 years now. Disney knows the game. But my god, there is one thing they cannot do in recent years and that is release dates. 2010 was a difficult year for Disney films they produced one good concept after another and actually took chances that many studios would not, such as resurrecting franchises that have not been touched in 28 years, banking on a video game to become the next Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and basing an entire movie off one scene in Fantasia. Disney was risking a lot in 2010 and honestly we all should thank them for it. But when Disney thought that Tron: Legacy could be another Avatar, thats when things went wrong with one of my favorite films of all time. It's not the most solid film in the world, but its final gross in theaters does not reflect in any way how much potential this series truly has, making the difficulty in getting Tron 3 off the ground even more tragic. With CGI galore and hoping to raise a few extra dollars by tossing on 3-D (and adding once again the most beautiful woman on the planet and the Grid, Olivia Wilde). Disney was hoping to make a summer blockbuster out of what they hope to be another Avatar, taking in endless weeks of little competition at the end of the year to make mega bucks. But it didn't happen It needed help from the energy of fellow movies being financially and critically successfully to pull this one onto land the way the Mouse wanted. Although this movie deserved a lot more for all the energy it put forth, its hard to blame anyone but Disney for this one. It was indeed more of a summer film when audiences are more inclined to spend a lot of money on a film in the middle of blockbuster hype. But no one can ignore the very talked about horrible advertising this film received, where Disney made little effort to target this film to anyone other than established fans of the original or anyone other than boys. It was bad decision-making on Disney's part, and something that we will see happen to some other great films on this list.
