10 Great Movies That Inadvertently Ruined Cinema

10. The Godfather: Part II Brought About The Use Of Numbers To Denote Sequels

Paramount

Having a part "Part II" tag on the end of a movie title might seem like something that has been around since the dawn of time, but it's a little known fact that Francis Ford Coppola's follow-up to The Godfather was the first movie in history to make blatant use of this subtitle. Before Coppola used "Part II" for the Godfather sequel, movie sequels tended to have different names - think on the likes of James Bond, for example.

Once Coppola opted to do it this way, however, a new movie trend was born... studios noticed it was a neat way to market sequels; the rest is history. What's interesting about this, though, is that Coppola's use of the "Part II" was employed genuinely because the movie was actually the necessary second part - it was a way to explain to audiences that the movie they had already seen had only been one half of the whole story.

It wasn't supposed to be a marketing ploy as much as it was a genuine declaration that The Godfather tale wasn't over - "here's the second part!" Thus, the trend of using numbers for follow-ups ever since has injected sequel names with an added sense of corporate greed.
