10 Great Movies That Scared You Without Showing Anything

6. The Haunting (1963)

Following two characters staying at an apparently haunted mansion, The Haunting terrifies audiences while at no point showing anything scary on camera.

There's a great scene when one of the main characters, Eleanor, is trying to sleep when she hears weird sounds from outside the room: chanting, giggling, and then spine-chilling screams. If you break this scene down, it's just a woman lying in a bed for three minutes. That's all you see. Yet with a combination of the skilful audio and masterful writing, it ends up being completely unforgettable.

The movie is full of moments like this, and it makes some of the best use of sound effects in horror film history. There's another sequence where the characters are all just looking at a door, but it's the horrifying noises you're hearing from the other side that make the scene work. If you were to watch this movie on mute, it wouldn't appear to be scary at all, yet the constant pounding, breathing, stomping and giggling turns this ordinary house into a total nightmare.
