1. Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb
The grandaddy of political satire remains to this day one of the best - Stanley Kubrick's Cold War satire Dr. Strangelove Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb can be said to be the first truly effective critique of the war machine's mentality ever made. Starring Peter Sellers in multiple roles including RAF Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, the American President and the titular nuclear scientist with a penchant for Nazi salutes, Dr. Strangelove centres around an imminent nuclear outbreak and the incompetence, arrogance and hubris circling in every corner. As hilarious as Dr. Strangelove frequently is (it's certainly the funniest Kubrick film, although he was hardly renowned for his over-active funny bone) its message of the dangers of nuclear war and the doctrine of mutually assured destruction will only become irrelevant once a truly committed campaign of global disarmament is implemented. Sadly, this isn't something mankind is likely to see any time soon. What other hilarious satires which tear politics to shreds would you recommend? Why not let us know in the comments below?
