10 Great Movies Where The Villain Kills The Hero
5. 3:10 To Yuma
Given the number of excellent revivalist Westerns that have been released in the past decade and a half, it's a travesty that the genre continues to be considered mostly dead. And when you consider the quality of films like the starry remake of 3:10 To Yuma, that travesty is magnified massively.
The film is an exceptional tale of good versus evil, as well as the lines that blur between them, as Christian Bale's rancher Dan Evans transports Russell Crowe's famed outlaw to his final train journey to the gallows. Sadly for Bale's good man seeking a pay-day, Crowe's gang, led by the always wonderful Ben Watson on visceral form are in pursuit and catch up to him just as the train pulls in.
Watson's Charlie Prince kills the hero on the cusp of his victory, and is then executed himself by his boss after a sudden moment of revelation before he boards the train willingly. And while Evans dies, he's able to provide the bounty for his family and restore his own honour before he goes. Bittersweet isn't the word.
