10 Great Movies With ONE Terrible Element
2. Hideous CGI - Black Panther
Black Panther was a major breath of fresh air when it released in 2018, showing a totally fresh side of the MCU, successfully endearing the audience to T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and company, and offering up one of the series' strongest villains to date.
Yet as Marvel Studios faces increasing criticism for the uneven quality of its films' CGI and the alleged maltreatment of the VFX companies it works with, it really all goes back to Black Panther.
Black Panther was the first MCU movie to receive major pushback for its low-rent VFX, for as lovingly rendered as the Wakandan cityscapes are throughout, the third act is a damn hot mess of unconvincingly gooey, video game-y CGI.
First there's those blurry, butt-ugly war rhinos, and worst of all there's the climactic battle between T'Challa and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), which combines low-fi textures with janky physics to resemble a dated video game tech demo.
VFX artists who worked on the film have squarely blamed Marvel Studios for not giving them enough time to complete the work to a satisfactory standard.
Considering that the recent Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - granted, in no way a great movie - was similarly dinged for its mediocre-looking CGI, it appears that little has changed.
