10 Great Movies You Didn't Understand The First Time

6. Donnie Darko

When a movie requires a director's cut with commentary in order to more plainly explain the plot, it's probably a sign that it's too hard to grasp in its original state. What can be described as a person experiencing an alternate timeline and seeing certain choices lived out in that reality, Donnie Darko doesn't exactly make for light viewing.

On a more detailed level, the film explores the notion of tangeant universes and Donnie erasing one before it collapses. It tells of space-time trying to fix itself because of his interference. There's a lot to let sink in and most of the really out-there ideas are almost impossible to even get a hold of the first time through.

Even after seeing it multiple times, it's still hard to completely get your mind around everything. Entire essays have been written trying to coherently explain everything that happened but in the end, Frank walking around in a bunny suit is enough to make anyone scratch their head.
