10 Great Music Film Biopics You Have To See

4. Sid And Nancy

Love And Mercy John Cusack Brian Wilson
MGM

Released on 1986, Sid and Nancy is the oldest movie on the list, and still holds up with the best that the biopic genre has to offer. Starring Gary Oldman as Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious and Chloe Webb as his equally dysfunctional girlfriend Nancy Spungen, the film follows the pair as they take part in the band's first US tour.

Sid and Nancy is a harsh and incredibly bleak portrait of drug abuse and two people whose reliance on one another leads them deeper and deeper into a pit of self-destruction and addiction. Opening with Vicious in a police station following the death of Spungen, the film goes back in time and allows you to see how he ended up in such a situation.

Unlike most modern biopics, Sid and Nancy is unafraid of portraying its characters as the violent and complex people they were. Sid Vicious in particular is not a massively sympathetic character on paper, but thanks to Oldman's understanding that the bassist was a violent anarchist as well as a naive young man, he manages to be slightly redeemable throughout the film's runtime.

If none of that piques your interest, then have a listen to Oldman's rendition of "My Way," which will have you hunting the film down in no time.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
