Stan writes to Eminem in the hope that his hero will write back and give him the attention he so desperately craves. However, as the song progresses, Stan hears nothing back. His optimism develops into violent frustration as we observe the rapid deterioration of his mental wellbeing. The video is excellently directed; the deluge of rain outside and sporadic roaring of thunder are a harbinger of the tragic conclusion. There is a particularly powerful scene in which Stan€™s pregnant girlfriend (played by Dido) stumbles across his disturbing collection of Eminem memorabilia. She is as shocked as we are, and when we see the maniacal figure of Stan creeping up on her in the background we fear for her safety. The chilling finale is made all the more devastating when Eminem finally gets the chance to write, but has the crushing realisation that is too late. In his madness, Stan locked his girlfriend into the boot of his car and drove it into a lake. A film exploring the roots of Stan€™s obsession and looking at how this affects his relationships with those around with him could make for an intriguing film concept.
