10 Great Opening Scenes In Otherwise Terrible Horror Movies
8. Alien: Covenant
Alien: Covenant tried to course-correct the franchise by removing the controversial aspects of Prometheus such as the Engineers and the deeper themes of faith. Because of this, we get more of a retread of the original Alien rather than the new direction its predecessor was aiming for. But the opening remains one of the best in the franchise despite its simplicity.
It starts with a conversation between the android David and his creator, Peter Weyland where we explore more of their father and son dynamic. Through Michael Fassbender's subtle performance, we see the seeds sown regarding the android's curious nature and his eventual turn as a full-blown villain.
It also deals with Covenant's theme as they talk about creation. Weyland, just like the human characters, seeks to find the purpose of his existence and his creator. David, on the other hand, knows why he was made and wants to become the creator himself, something he'll become by the end of the film.
It's a shame that Prometheus' fan reception led to the interesting ideas being dropped in Covenant. As seen through here, a simple conversation between two characters proved to be more engaging than the rest of the film.
