10 Great Opening Scenes In Otherwise Terrible Horror Movies
6. Saw V
Saw V took the series in a new direction with Det. Mark Hoffman taking over as the new Jigsaw. The film explores how he inherited the role and his time with John Kramer, the original killer, while showcasing the series' tried and tested traps.
But despite its premise, the fifth entry showed signs of franchise fatigue as it failed to live up to its potential, yet its opening remains one of the series' best.
Though the film properly opens with the pendulum trap, the scene soon shifts to Special Agent Peter Strahm who had been hunting down the infamous killer in the previous movie. After being trapped in an operating room, he is captured by Hoffman and placed in a water box trap which is designed to drown the good agent. As water soon fills up the contraption, our film's protagonist finds a clever solution by using a pen to perform a makeshift tracheotomy on himself which allows him to breathe.
Not only is this scene memorable but Strahm's decision is genuinely a good call in a life or death situation, something that is rare in the horror genre. Props to actor Scott Patterson as well who did the scene without the use of a stunt double.
