10 Great Performances Lost In Unwatchable Movies
1. Michael Gough (Batman And Robin)
Batman & Robin is widely and rightfully regarded as one of the worst comic book adaptations of all time. Its immediate predecessor, Batman Forever, wasn't all that hot either. And while Batman was sticking nipples to his rubber Batsuit, Chris O' Donnell was Robin (!) and Arnie Schwarzenegger was dropping freeze puns like no tomorrow, one man kept his cool throughout: Michael Gough, as Alfred Pennyworth.
The last vestige of the Burton continuity (aside from Pat Hingle's joke of a Commissioner Gordon), Gough's Alfred provides a warmth, stability and dignity which is entirely missing elsewhere.
How great is Gough as Alfred? So great that one of the franchise's most touching moments comes deep in the middle of Batman And Robin, as Alfred provides comfort, solace and guidance to his Master Bruce. "What is Batman if not an effort to master the chaos which sweeps our world?" asks Alfred, with an insight and depth worthy of the Nolan trilogy.
No, you're crying at Batman And Robin.
