Yes, everyone and their mum is suddenly claiming to be a fan of Bong Joon-Ha’s earlier work since the release of his sleeper hit Oscar winner Parasite late last year. But the acclaimed director’s CV is authentically incredible, and his back catalogue is filled with crowd-pleasing fare like The Host which will hopefully now find the mainstream global appreciation it deserved way back in 2006 upon its initial release.

The film follows one family’s devastation after an attack by an overgrown tadpole on a South Korean city due to American industrial pollution—it’s more emotionally resonant than that summary sounds, trust us. The film is filled with humour, pathos, and some incredibly tense set pieces, but pivotal to its success is the incredible creature design utilized in the aforementioned overgrown tadpole.

Slimy, huge, and moving with horrifying speed and dexterity, the thing can’t easily be categorized as a member of any species (okay admittedly it doesn’t look that much like a tadpole), and the appearance of this strange biological mashup is uniquely unsettling as a result.

Unfortunately, although an incredible trailer for a sequel materialized in 2012, centring the return of this unforgettable monster, the flick has yet to come to fruition.
