10 Great Sci-Fi Movies Under 90 Minutes

5. Chronicle - 89 Minutes

ARQ movie
20th Century Fox

Instead of having a convoluted and over-the-top plot like most superhero origin stories, Chronicle has a simple premise. Three teenagers, Andrew, Matt, and Steve, are endowed with superpowers after stumbling upon an alien artefact. At first, the trio love experimenting with their newfound abilities. But after Andrew becomes increasingly unstable, his friends are forced to stand against him.

It's baffling to believe the guy who made travesties like Fant4stic and Capone is responsible for crafting one of the most creative superhero blockbusters in...well... ever. There's no costumes, capes, or quips. Director, Josh Trank, strips away all the tropes, to focus on the dynamic between the three leads. Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan are so charismatic, you can see why Chronicle helped launch their careers.

By telling the story through found footage, everything feels more personal. Whether our characters are having a heart-to-heart or tearing up the city, you feel like you are in the thick of it. The special effects and action sequences look more authentic than anything in Avengers: Endgame despite the film having 3% of the budget.

If you're suffering from superhero fatigue (and who isn't nowadays?) Chronicle will feel like a breath of fresh air.
