10 Great Sci-Fi Villains Trapped In Terrible Movies

5. General Thade - Planet Of The Apes (2001)

Masters Of The Universe Skeletor

Although recent years have proven that rebooting old sci-fi film franchises can turn out astronomically worse, Tim Burton’s attempt at Planet of the Apes is still recognised as an undeniable failure. It’s mostly an uninspired rehash of the original 1968 film, inelegantly repurposing its dialogue and narrative. The few new additions it does make are controversial to say the least, such as the comical “return of Semos” and, of course, the brain-exploding twist ending featuring Ape-raham Lincoln himself.

One thing that is agreed upon, however, is that this film is full of great performances. Paul Giamatti and Helena Bonham-Carter are exceptional behind their astoundingly ape-ish make-up, although lead-role Mark Wahlberg apparently only brought one facial expression with him to the set. The apes really outperform the humans in this one.

Amongst these primate performances was Tim Roth’s show-stopping appearance as General Thade, a fascist chimp who harbours an unflinching disdain for the human race. Roth embodies a seething, snarling sadist who is consumed by hatred. His head remains tilted downwards, adopting an evil glare, his crouched physicality characterises his crippling rage, and his animalistic bursts of violence brought out the wild side in him in a genuinely terrifying way. Thade absolutely oozed evil in this film. Bad monkey!
