10 Great World War 1 Films You've Probably Never Seen

5. Beneath Hill 60

Mel Gibson Gallipoli
Paramount Pictures

Beneath Hill 60 tells the extraordinary and largely unknown story of Oliver Woodward an Australian metallurgist and mine manager recruited to the war effort in 1916 for a very special mission.

Forced to leave behind his life Down Under, Woodward travelled to the Western Front where, with the help of a special platoon of Australian tunnellers, he is tasked with defending a labyrinthine tunnel system beneath Ypres packed with enough explosives to swing the war in the Allies favour.

It’s an astonishing story few, if any, but the most ardent of history buffs will be aware of and one brought to life in gritty, eye-catching style by actor-turned-filmmaker Jeremy Sims. Beneath Hill 60 has the feel of a big budget war epic yet was made for a fraction of what its contemporaries' cost.

Yet the impressive visuals would have likely fallen flat were it not for the powerfully affecting performances of the principal cast, who help bring the story to life, imbuing the characters with a sense of urgency and humanity that leaves you rooting for their success.
