One of the scary things about zombies is that they always travel in packs. Nothing is quite as dread-inducing as seeing a huge group of decaying, gnashing zombies slowly sauntering towards one of your favourite characters as it becomes clear that the odds are not in their favour.

But would these creatures be as scary if there was only one of them? Well, if you've seen It Stains the Sands Red, then you know that the answer is yes.

Released in 2016, this Canadian-American collaboration stars Brittany Allen and Merwin Mondesir as a couple trying to escape a zombie apocalypse. Hopefully, Mondesir wasn't paid by the hour for this one, because he dies almost straight away.

Allen's character, Molly, watches her partner get killed by a single zombie very early on in the film. She then spends the rest of the movie trying to escape this single zombie, as it slowly stalks her across the Nevada desert.

For a genre that's hard to innovate in, It Stains the Sands Red is a truly original zombie concept. It manages to be scary without an over-reliance on worn out tropes, and proves that size isn't everything when it comes to flesh-eating ghouls.
