10 Greatest Baseball Films Of All Time
7. Field Of Dreams (1989)
The first of two Kevin Costner films on this list is baseball’s most supernatural film. After hearing voices in his head, Ray Kinsella (Costner) decides to build a baseball field. For many, this knee-jerk reaction would be punished with unattainable financial burdens, but not for Ray who is rewarded for his faith when legends of baseball’s past soon start turning up.
The film features an all-star cast, including Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster in his final film role. The heartwarming film would receive massive commercial and cultural success, with the project even being selected for preservation by the Library of Congress at the United States National Film Registry in 2017.
Best Scene:
There are many great scenes in this film, but James Earl Jones’ monologue has to be the standout moment of the lot.
"They will come, to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn into your driveway, not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door, as innocent as children, longing for the past.
… But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come".
Brilliant.
