1. The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey - Riddles in the Dark
A late addition to this list comes from Peter Jacksons much anticipated return to Middle Earth. As a film, it may not quite compare to its illustrious predecessors and is not without its faults, but it is nonetheless still a highly entertaining piece of cinema. Perhaps the finest moment of the film, and the scene which everyone will have been picturing in their heads prior to seeing it, is where Bilbo runs into Gollum deep underground and the pair engage in a game of riddles. Andy Serkis take on Gollum was one of the standout performances in the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy and he and the FX team deserve great credit for capturing not only the menace and grotesqueness of the character, but also the desperation and helplessness brought on by his connection to the ring. The Riddle in the Dark sequence has Serkis on top skulking form as Gollum creeps and stalks his way around Martin Freemans increasingly exasperated Bilbo. The pair engage in a high stakes game of riddles whereby if Bilbo wins, he is shown the way out, but if Gollum wins, he gets to eat Bilbo. The two actors are spot on throughout and with our prior knowledge of the ring and its incredible importance; the scene takes on a special significance. As well as being expertly shot by Jackson, this scene is also therefore a wonderful link to the Lord of the Rings trilogy we all know and love. When Bilbo first spots the ring and THAT little piece of music swirls in the background, youre instantly transported back to when you first fell in love with Jacksons world.
