10 Greatest Cinematic Survivors

3. Chuck Noland - Cast Away

A second position upon this list for the great Tom Hanks; this time with perhaps his most famed performance of facing uncertain odds. His character Chuck Noland is a time-obssesed systems engineer at FedEx who travels globally to resolve ongoing technical problems at the organisation's various depots. Upon a flight over the South Pacific, tragedy strikes when the plane plummets leaving him stranded on a remote and uninhabited island. He is Cast Away. The simplicity of the story beautifully lends itself to Hanks who is the narrative. Gathering essentials from the remainder of the destroyed plane, Chuck manages enough items to barely get by but his odyssey upon the deserted land spans nearly half a decade. As we watch Hanks grow thinner, weaker and more isolated, it would be easy to presume that his failure is certain, but by maintaining focus and advancing throughout his treacherous ordeal makes him a willing, capable survivor. Together he and Wilson (the volleyball in which he befriends) strive and receive the payment wholly warranted: freedom.
