10 Greatest Cut To Black Movie Endings EVER

9. Saint Maud

Rose Glass' stunning directorial debut Saint Maud uses a sudden cut to black to brilliantly jarring effect in its unforgettable final scene.

After stabbing her patient Amanda (Jennifer Ehle) to death after believing her to have become possessed by a demon, devout Roman Catholic nurse Maud (Morfydd Clark) walks onto the beach, douses herself in acetone, and sets herself alight.

But rather than focus on the grisly outcome, Glass instead shows the experience from Maud's own twisted, mentally fractured perspective, as she suddenly sprouts angel wings and everybody else on the beach bows down in awe of her.

Maud stares up to the sky, before Glass abruptly cuts back to reality, where Maud lets out a blood-curdling scream while burning to death. The shot lasts only a second before Glass cuts to black, and proves all the more fantastically unnerving as a result.

It tells us everything we need to know about the situation in a mere second, before leaving the audience to quietly stew in the horrifying sight they've just witnessed.
