10 Greatest Cut To Black Movie Endings EVER

3. United 93

The Matrix Keanu Reeves
Universal

There was zero doubt about how Paul Greengrass' United 93 would end, given that it dramatised the hijacking and crashing of United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

Yet Greengrass' clinical, detached reconstruction of that day's horrific events knew that there was nowhere to go following the fateful crash, and so smartly decided to just... end the movie there.

The harrowing final scene, as the plane's passengers storm the cockpit and attempt to regain control of the plane, concludes with a cockpit view of the plane descending into the field where it crashes, but Greengrass cuts to black moments before impact.

Whatever you make of the film's sheer existence - especially releasing less than five years after 9/11 as it did - the ending is a filmmaking masterstroke, and likely guaranteed that Greengrass went on to receive a Best Director Oscar nomination for his incredible work.
