10 Greatest Ever Musical Movies

8. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton's Disney favourite might not be the first thing that leaps to your mind when you think of classic movie musicals, but it should be. The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the few picks on this list that was made for film first, and therefore showcases perfectly how movie musicals can achieve some things that your typical Broadway affair simply can't.

Narrowly beating out Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas has one thing Burton's other most memorable animated classic doesn't: Jack Skellington. Jack Skellington is such a charismatic protagonist that we're all sucked into his tragic arc - he only wants to bring the kind of joy he experiences at Halloween to a new kind of holiday. His childlike glee rubs off with ease, sweeping us along on the rollercoaster ride whilst he can get away with living his dream.

If you reject Tim Burton's classice just because it's animated, you're doing both yourself and the musical genre a disservice. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a joyous redemptive tale which is extremely well structured and trims all the fat from the typical tragic arc. If it's not already on your seasonal rotation, The Nightmare Before Christmas deserves a spot.
