1. Untitled Monster Movie (Holy Motors)

holymotorsfilm A motion-capture artist is summoned to the studio, where, dressed in a dark body suit spotted with sensors, he performs wildly acrobatic stunts, shoots at invisible enemies and has slippery simulated sex with his female counterpart. Not that context matters in a film such as Holy Motors, but the man is Monsieur Oscar (Denis Lavant), one of cinema's greatest chameleons. A sex scene choreographed like a ballet, the two bodies glide and grope around each other until we hear every squeak of their tight-fitting costumes. Then we see what the actors have been portraying. The camera slowly pans right to reveal a nightmarish vision of two snakelike creatures, in flagrante; their long, spiralling tails and tongues interlinked to resemble Giger's reworking of Avatar. In a film filled with the macabre and the madcap, it takes something special to emblazon itself onto the viewer's memory. This should certainly do the trick...
