8. The Equestrian Vortex (Berberian Sound Studio)

Aside from a blood-red title sequence, we never see a single frame of this film-within-a-film. But it certainly sounds frightening. Indeed, tasked with producing its Foley effects almost costs mild-mannered sound engineer Gilderoy (Toby Jones) his sanity. In his homage to 70's Italian horror, Studio's director Peter Strickland turns Argento to present a tale of witches, torture and paranoia. Or, in the words of Vortex's producer, Santini, 'It's about a horse-riding girl. She's just not riding a horse any more''. A knife through a cabbage here, a sledgehammer through a melon there- all this violence proves too much for poor Gilderoy. Added to this, tensions between the crew and this Englishman abroad force him to obsess over every recording. He sinks into melancholy and madness - but Vortex, with its guttural howls and shattering screams rages on....
