10 Greatest Jack Nicholson Performances Of All Time
9. Melvin Udall - As Good As It Gets
Securing him his third Oscar win, Nicholson's performance in James L Brooks' comedy-drama As Good As It Gets was an exercise in growth - something the actor frequently showcases in many of his roles. Melvin Udall is at once a bigot and an insensitive snob, but as the film unravels it becomes apparent that underneath all of that he actually has a heart.
In the film, Melvin is portrayed as a middle-aged author of romance novels who has severe OCD and a complete lack of social etiquette. But after falling for a waitress and helping his neighbour with his dog, Melvin slowly but surely begins to develop a conscience and forces himself to confront his biggest flaws.
Despite his ignorant views of homosexuality and his inability to acceptably talk to people, Nicholson's general likability and laid-back approach to the role means that Melvin is funny and understandable long before his journey of self-discovery. You know from his first few scenes that although he isn't the nicest man around, there's something much better hiding not far under the surface.
With Nicholson in the role, this is clear from the get-go, and when it comes time for Melvin to step up and be the man he was always meant to be, the actor delivers without fault.
