10 Greatest Mockumentary Films Of All Time
5. Brass Eye: Paedogeddon
Chris Morris is more salesman that TV personality; the man can sell anything. And he did so repeatedly throughout the nineties and early noughties fooling and trolling people with fake news show The Day Today and current affairs satire, Brass Eye.
No stranger to controversy, Morris created the most furore with his wickedly clever special one off edition of Brass Eye ‘Paedogeddon’; a satirical look at the coverage of paedophilia by news networks. Unsurprisingly, people complained.
Channel 4 received over 3000 complaints about the show, and this was before social media so people really had to be pissed off to complain about something. ‘Paedogeddon’ caused such a stir that it even managed to wriggle its way into the Leveson Inquiry.
It’s an absurd, maniacal, utterly ballsy approach from Morris who even roped in celebrities such as Gary Lineker, Phil Collins and Doctor Fox to make outlandish, completely untrue claims, all taking utter ‘n*nce sense’.
These included facts that paedophiles were using an area of Internet the size of Ireland and that they have more genes in common with crabs than with normal people. Morris could sell an audience whatever he wanted, he was the PT Barnham of satirical television.
Suckering in both celebrities and the viewing public, over 15 years have passed since it first aired, and there hasn’t really been anything as funny on television since this. It gave world phrases such as ‘Unabummer’ and ‘pervert mechanics’ whilst warning of a child abuser who ‘disguised himself as a school’, there has been nothing quite like Morris’ approach to television since this aired.
