10 Greatest Monster Movies Of The 21st Century

1. The Descent

Not all monsters are capable of levelling entire cities or tearing the heads off of beloved statues, some are simply vicious enough to turn an otherwise pleasant spelunking trip into a living nightmare.

Neil Marshall’s The Descent is a masterpiece in tight, claustrophobic horror – relationships between our central characters are already strained upon entering the film’s labyrinthine cave system, and things only get worse once flesh-eating humanoid creatures start building up an appetite.

Jam-packed with effective jump scares, The Descent is one of the most overbearing creature-features of all time, the mid-2000s’ answer to Alien or The Thing. Its slimy, mole-like creatures are merciless and unrelenting, and typify exactly what it means to be a monster: they don’t think, they don’t feel, and they don’t let up.

They’ll likely never reach the iconic status of a King Kong or a Godzilla, but they’re a downright terrifying product of 21st Century filmmaking.
