The Shawshank Redemption may be a great example of a heartfelt, everlasting friendship, but Frodo and Sam's friendship in The Lord of the Rings trilogy gains the edge by a mere fraction of a millimeter. Sure, prison must be tough and mentally draining, but so is traversing a giant, erupting volcano surrounded by the army of Mordor and the Eye of Sauron. With the exception of making their way through the mines of Moria with the Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo and Sam are left to their own devices for the rest of their journey, with only a deranged and deformed Gollum helping them when he decides to. Not only do the two Hobbits have the constant threat of the One Ring trying to ensnare them to its will and drive them apart, they also have to deal with giant spiders, Sauron's cronies and Gollum himself. Their treacherous journey to Mt. Doom takes an entire year of their lives to complete, draining them of any innocence or happiness in their lives. The two Hobbits are perhaps the ultimate example of friendship, and if your best friend isn't willing to climb a mountain and fend off house-sized arachnids for you, then they're not a real friend.
