2. Marge Gunderson - Fargo
Marge Gunderson is unlike most movie cops. She's not a rebel who refuses to abide the rules, she isn't a high-functioning alcoholic and she isn't even a week away from retirement. She's as close to 'normal' as movies get, especially when it comes to the Coen Brothers. Masterfully played by Frances McDormand, Marge is the politest cop you're ever likely to come across. Even amongst the many great creations of the Coen brothers Marge stands out as one of their best. Amongst the mounting craziness of Fargo, Marge remains its warm and relatable heart as she goes about her business in an astounding matter-of-fact way. Marge somehow manages to overcome psychotic killers and incompetent police work throughout the movie all whilst heavily pregnant, and she's one of the most recognisable female faces of cinema.
