10 Greatest Movie Teasers That Used Original Footage

6. The Exorcist

Terminator 2 Teaser Trailer
Warner Bros. Pictures

The Exorcist is considered one of the scariest films of all time and one factor to its success is the reputation of this teaser trailer. Fair warning though, the flashing images might trigger some seizures and epileptic attacks.

The trailer starts off with the iconic image of Father Merrin arriving at the MacNeil's home. The narration, 'Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street,' promises a terrifying experience like no other and raises questions as to what possibly could have happened to the child. The answer is revealed by a series of flashing, black and white images of a possessed Regan and her demonic captor, Pazuzu.

Combined with Lalo Schriffin's scrapped score, the teaser conveys a sense of dread and disorientation.

Despite using images from the film, the teaser turns them into a terrifying collage that left many viewers vomiting in the theatre. Because of this, the trailer was pulled from cinemas and was deemed 'too scary' by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The notoriety of this footage made people wonder how something could produce such a visceral reaction, and helped The Exorcist become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
