10 Greatest Movies About American Politics
6. Bulworth
Warren Beatty, 60 years of age, plays a senator who gets tired of all the Washington skullduggery. He arranges his own assassination so that his daugher can benefit from a life insurance policy, and starts to speak his mind, embracing urban culture and taking up rapping, to the consternation of the stuffed shirts on Capitol Hill.
If that sounds absolutely unbearable and like the last film you’d ever countenance watching, well, it isn’t. Somehow, it’s really good, a daring and brash take on modern American politics and race relations with a self effacing and hugely charismatic turn from the star.
Beatty, who also directs, has always been deeply involved in politics, and is not shy about sharing his worldview here. With the late nineties seeing an economic boom, Beatty is sure to turn his sights on the endemic greed of the western world, and the people left behind by rampant capitalism.
It’s a wild film that struggled to find a major audience, which is unsurprising, but Beatty’s refreshing approach and wild performance should be praised. Not always a comfortable watch, but an important one.
