10 Greatest Movies Never Made

1. Batman

Paramount Pictures

In a very weird parallel universe, indie sensation, Darren Aronofsky, was the man to resurrect the Batman franchise with his unique visual style and intense psychological study. Of course, as we all know, Christopher Nolan was given the reigns and his Batman trilogy received a substantial amount of critical and commercial acclaim.

Aronofsky would not have been on anybody's list to direct a Batman movie, least of all at the time when he was actually involved. After the indie success of Pi and Requiem for a Dream, Warner Bros. turned to him to direct a darker, more visceral Batman movie. They essentially wanted to go as far away from Joel Schumacher's take on the character as possible. Aronofsky was going to adapt the gritty Batman: Year One comic, in which Bruce Wayne grows increasingly psychotic, which would have been perfect for the hot-shot's style.

Christian Bale, after brilliantly portraying Patrick Bateman in the excellent adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, American Psycho was set to star, and whilst he ultimately did, the project fell apart. It's not a surprise Warner Bros. got cold feet over Aronofsky as he was distinctly unproven, especially for a film with the scale and pressure as Batman.

Aronofsky would have undoubtedly directed an interesting version of the superhero but perhaps he genuinely was not ready for the movie all those years ago, and the Batman franchise has done pretty well without him. However, the rumours about Aronofsky directing a superhero movie have persisted ever since.
